It is important that our coasts are managed because of many reasons. Some things
that are affecting Australia's coasts include:
- wild animal habitat
- industry
- sand mining
- settlements/housing
- tourism/recreation
- resource extraction
Two-thirds of Australias population
live in the towns/cities near the coast. This is affected the ecosystem during
the past two centuries. Human activity has reduced the biodiversity of our
coastlines which are meant to help keep them healthy. Small organisms are often
the first link in food chains.
The removal of vegetation for
housing developements has been significantly reduced in biodiversity and has
disrupted the natural processes of the coastal ecosystem.
An
example of this is beaches. Beaches are formed by an ongoing cycle of erosion
and deposition of sand. Then when the sand erodes away by storms, large waves
replace them. When humans attempt to use these areas for housing and recreation,
this natural
cycle is interrupted and sand banks diminish.
All of this is found in any beach or coastal area around australia.
